Institutional Approach

Kenyatta University, in Nairobi, Kenya, has several Education for Sustainable Development-focused initiatives. Their Green Education Hub, launched in 2022, is a transdisciplinary hub with the mission of transforming higher education for sustainability. Via landmark projects such as ‘Climate Uni’, they are building theories of change and impact for transforming universities and fostering knowledge sharing in the Global South. As an alternative for conventional entrepreneurship training at universities, Kenyatta launched the Chandaria Business Incubation and Innovation Centre (KUCBIIC) in 2013. This center provides a physical space and support for students to translate their ideas into commercial businesses. In addition to business training, a mentorship programme within the centre aims to shape entrepreneural values and attitudes, while establishing valuable linkages between students and entrepreneurs. Innovations that have been nurtured at KUCBIIC cover a variety of themes such as agriculture, health, energy, environment and water and sanitation, and help to provide solutions for a wide range of societal challenges.
