Institutional Approach

Stellenbosch University, South Africa, is engaged in innovative pedagogical and institutional experimentations. Chief amongst these is the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST), a flagship sustainability education, training and research hub founded in 2015. The CST offers three postgraduate programmes – Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Sustainable Development, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Sustainable Development and PhD in Sustainable Development - oriented towards sustainability transitions and transformations. The PGDip in Sustainable Development targets professionals in the public and private sectors, activists and recent graduates, engaging them in transdisciplinary education and skills development. The Centre’s MPhil in Sustainable Development and PhD in Sustainable Development offers candidates with the opportunity for further transdisciplinary research within the CST’s five core areas of research: knowledge co-production, social-ecological resilience, transformative futures thinking, finance and research flows, and political economy and development. Transdisciplinary learning via CST's graduate education happens in partnership with various societal partners, collaborators and other institutions and universities. Stellenbosch also hosts the SDG Impact Hub, a center promoting international collaboration for the goals, supporting the development of additional SDG hubs in Africa in particular.
