Institutional Approach

The University of Crete holds the UNESCO chair in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Education for Sustainable Development. Under this mandate, they coordinate a variety of sustainable development initiatives such as pan-Mediterranean refugee aid, capacity building in ICT training for teachers in South East Asia and Africa, and host an intercultural migration studies center. Their project “RUCAS: Reorient University Curricula to Address Sustainability” has initiated various activities in Crete and in partner countries’ institutions concerning curriculum reform. This initiative includes the revision of courses and building of relevant infrastructure to support curriculum reform for sustainability – such as the development of an online community of practice and the RUCAS Toolkit. The University of Crete also initiated a roadmap towards its own sustainability transformation, with key pillars including empowering students, utilization of the campus for innovation, and awareness and promotion of best practices, companies, and organizations for sustainability transitions.
