Institutional Approach

The University of Gävle’s operations, education and research are entirely oriented around the concept of sustainable living, with a focus on sustainable human environments. Their scope encompasses ecological, social, and economic sustainability aspects of human environments, which is integrated throughout the university on all levels. They include 17 of the SDGs in their mission and are aiming to align every program to an SDG. The university also has a comprehensive environmental management system which integrates environmental issues into the planning, implementation, monitoring and improvement of all university activities. The environmental management system does not sit as a separate operational unit, but is rather integrated into Gävle’s academic and educational mandate on sustainable development. This mandate concerns research and implementation of the direct environmental impacts of all university activities including resource use and carbon dioxide emissions.
